Language Development Scale.

Tatiana Cooke Munkes

Are you concerned about your child’s language development?

Why is so important to have a good language development?

Effective language development will support your child to function better in society. Meaning: your child will interact better with their friends in kindergarten, school, with family and other members of society.

Bilingual speech language therapists know the phases of language development and can identify any issues that may arise during each phase and consequently correct them.

There are six basic language stages:

#1.Pre-linguistic (0-6 months) A child hasn’t developed any language skills. They communicate through sounds, they cry, make cooing sounds;

#2.Babbling stage (6-12 months) A child begins to babble, making noises and syllables that are not yet words (“bababa or mamama”);

#3. Holophrastic stage (12- 18 months) A child has considerably increased their language skills and can say single words for objects and express basic needs like “juice”, “come”;

#4. Two-word stage (18-24) A child can speak two-word sentences, like “more food”, “come mom”

#5. Telegraphic stage (24-30 months) A child is able to speak three-and four-word sentences, such as “ What is that?” “What you doing?”

#6. Multi-word stage (Beyond 30months) A child has the ability to speak complex sentences, has a vocabulary of more than 900 words

Here I have summarized language development scales from different sources and authors. I hope that you will be able to use it to get a better idea of your child's, pupil's or client's development.

If you are unsure about your child’s language development, you may profit from a speech language counselling.

Warm wishes
